An Update on the Management of Heavy Menstrual Bleeding

HKJGOM 2009; 9 (1) 50 Introduction The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) published a management guideline on heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) in 20071. It was defined as excessive menstrual blood loss that interferes with the woman’s physical, emotional, social, and material quality of life, and which can occur alone or in combination with other symptoms. The current definition differs from previous definitions used in research studies2, which quantified menorrhagia as more than 80 ml of blood loss per cycle.
